How to choose the right knife for the kitchen

What type of kitchen knife should I buy?

Japan Fun Kitchen offer 2 different types of Japanese cooking knives in our store. Santoku knives and paring knives.
  • If you use one knife for all cooking, 150 mm (5-29/32 in.) paring knife is the right one for you. 
  • If you prefer to use 2 different lengths, 170 or 180mm Santoku and 120 mm (4-23/32 in.) or 125 mm (4-59/64 in.) paring knife are the best combination.

Santoku Knife

In Japan, the Santoku knife is the most popular kitchen knife. Santoku knife has good features from both chef’s knife and Japanese vegetable knife, and performs well for slicing, dicing and mincing. It's literally “Three-purpose” knife that you can use cutting meat, fish, or vegetables.It is a very useful multipurpose cooking knives.

We, Japan Fun Kitchen, carry standard length in 170 mm (6-11/16 in.) or 180 mm (7-3/32 in.) and short length in 145 mm (5-45/64 in.)

The short length is excellent size for small hands.

MXM series Santoku knife

Paring Knife ( Japanese Petty Knife)

We offer paring knives as well. Paring knife is a small version of chef’s knife. Weight is lighter than chef’s knife and Santoku knife. So, it’s easy to handle in your kitchen.

You can choose 2 different lengths. Longer one is 150 mm (5-29/32 in.), and shorter one is 120 mm (4-23/32 in.) or 125 mm (4-59/64 in.). Longer one can be used almost any foods. Shorter one is very good for smaller slicing tasks, vegetable peeling and detailed work.

Bird's beak knife

Very short blade paring knives are available as well. Lengths are 80 mm (3-5/32 in.) and 55 mm (2-11/64 in.). 55 mm long one is called bird's beak knife because shape of blade looks like bird's beak. They are suitable for making decorative cuts and trimming the bad spots out of vegetables.
